Starting on 28 October 2024, both Telstra and Optus will be shutting down their third-generation (3G) networks. This follows the earlier move by TPG Telecom/Vodafone, which phased out its 3G network in early 2024.
There are certain medical devices and personal alarms may be impacted by the shutdown and the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) advised all consumers, manufacturers, suppliers, and healthcare providers to take necessary precautions to prevent medical device disruption.
Older devices that rely solely on 3G, 4G devices dependent on 3G services, and imported 4G devices not configured for Australian networks are at significant risk of being impacted. These devices may lose the ability to make emergency calls, as they will no longer have access to data, texts, or calls-including the ability to contact Triple Zero (000).
Listed below are some of the impacted devices:
Manufacturers and suppliers had been advised to proactively inform their consumers or healthcare providers of the possible risks and what to prepare. Or else, consumers or healthcare providers should:
Review any medical device that may be affected by the shutdown and seek a replacement or upgrade where necessary
Ensure that medical devices critical for emergency communication are not at risk of losing functionality.
